The Predator sequels have all failed to live up the original and are a mess. Prey strips everything that was essential to make the original Predator so compelling. This creates an even more terrifying and primal experience. The movie has moments that are reminiscent of The Revenant. There is no time when we can be sure the heroes we're supporting are in the clear. Although the scenery is spectacular, I was concerned about the movie's (other) attempts to complicate it. Prey (2022) is a much smaller film than The Predator. It doesn't try to do too much. It does well when things are peaceful and quiet (just before each attack). Dan Trachtenberg made two great sequels. His ability to master the era is evident, but what truly makes it stand out is the film’s ambiance. The film is filled by a growing sense foreboding. The film's tenseness comes from this emotion and continues for the entirety of the third act. Although it has a slow beginning, that is normal given the characters' established roles.
